For the first time in the centuries-long history of mankind, fundamental civil, political, economic, cultural and social rights and freedoms were proclaimed at the highest global level, recognizing their universality, interdependence and indivisibility.

The Declaration has become a symbol of hope and faith of millions of people in a better future, a more just and humane world. Its provisions laid the foundation for the adoption of a number of important international human rights documents and the establishment of a new branch of law – international human rights protection. The principles of the Declaration are enshrined in the legislation of many countries around the world.
