Channel 112 has asked for protection from international organizations and diplomats.

On Friday, July 12, the channel “112 Ukraine” turned for help to diplomatic institutions and international organizations in the field of protecting the rights of journalists because of the action of right-wing radicals outside the building of the channel, which is scheduled for July 13.

This is stated in the appeal of the Director General of “112 Ukraine” Yegor Benkendorf, published on the website of the channel.

The statement notes that the channel “112 Ukraine” takes this opportunity to express its respect for you and draw your attention to the urgent need to protect one of the most popular Ukrainian TV channels, the current attacks on which indicate a serious threat to freedom of speech and media independence as the core values of a democratic society.

The decision to send appeals for help to diplomatic missions and reputable international organizations, in particular those dealing with the protection of the rights of journalists, is dictated by the fact that the TV channel “112 Ukraine” not only remains an object of attack from certain politicians who oppose freedom of speech and basic principles of journalistic activity, the culmination of which was the resolution of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine on the application of sanctions of October 4, 2018 (which, however, has not yet been applied), but today has been threatened Ozo direct physical attacks from radical organizations in the conditions of complete disregard for this danger by the current Ukrainian authorities.

The TV channel “112 Ukraine” is the leader of the country’s news information broadcasting and is among the ten most rated Ukrainian TV channels. The TV channel’s airing content consists of live guest studios, investigative journalism programs, several copyright interview programs and regular news releases. The channel also produces a number of full-length political talk shows, which are among the most popular political programs on Ukrainian television.

The TV channel is equally open to representatives of various political forces, government bodies, public figures and experts, regardless of their political preferences. It is quite natural that people who criticize the current government also become guests of our broadcast, in particular, they point out the insufficient efforts to establish peace and the return of Ukrainian prisoners, mistakes in the implementation of Ukraine’s foreign policy, the government’s failure to fulfill its electoral promises, the growth of corruption and freedom of speech. We emphasize that the communication with the guests of the TV channel is live, and, therefore, this information is given “without cuts” and editing, and people who are in the studio have the opportunity to directly express their opinions on the most pressing issues of concern to society.

Unfortunately, with the approach of the parliamentary elections of 2019, more and more politicians are appearing in Ukraine who are trying to use the channel’s editorial policy as an object of attack and a tool to ensure low-cost political public relations. The reason for the next attack on the channel, which may occur tomorrow, on Saturday, July 13, was the tape of the world famous director Oliver Stone, who, apart from Ukraine, is scheduled to be shown in more than 70 countries around the world. The organizer of the rally, the well-known head of the public organization of the right-wing “Indifferent” Sergei Sternenko calls for an unauthorized rally outside the building where the 112 Ukraine TV channel is located and to block his work in all possible ways. We do not exclude that these actions will be accompanied by damage to the property of the TV channel and, possibly, to violent acts against journalists. With regret, we state that the pressure from radical organizations is taking place in conditions of complete disregard for this problem by the new Ukrainian government.

The channel “112 Ukraine” believes that attempts to stop its activities are part of a larger process and concern the unsatisfactory situation with respect for freedom of speech in Ukraine. Ukrainian and Western human rights organizations, politicians, government officials and independent media experts have repeatedly drawn attention to this.

Therefore, we appeal to you with a request to express our position on the protection of our right to a profession, the right of people to receive objective information, as well as the right to freedom of expression, the right to think and speak freely. For the majority of our employees, the TV channel “112 Ukraine” is one of the last islands of freedom of speech, that is, one of the last places that remained in Ukraine for self-realization in the profession of a journalist.

This message was sent to the President of the European Commission, the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, the Secretary General of the Council of Europe, the President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, the Chairman of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, the Program Coordinator for Europe and Central Asia. Protection of Journalists, Secretary General of the International Federation of Journalists, to international organizations Human Rights Watch, Freedom House, Amnesty International, “Repor EASURES without Borders “and the European Federation of Journalists.

The TV channel “112 Ukraine” once again emphasizes that during the entire period of its existence it adheres to the principles of journalistic work, on equal rights it provides an opportunity for all Ukrainian politicians, government officials and independent experts to express their position, and also does not avoid coverage of acute political issues and social topics, and that this particular position of the channel causes and will cause resistance from individual politicians and political forces.
