Poroshenko dealt a terrible blow to freedom of speech – Human Rights Watch

The international human rights organization Human Rights Watch condemned the sanctions on popular Russian social networks in Ukraine and stated that Petro Poroshenko should cancel the ban. This is stated on the website of HRW.

“This is another example of the ease with which Poroshenko illegally tries to control public discourse in Ukraine,” said the representative of the organization Tanya Cooper.

According to her, the president can try to justify this step, but this is a cynical attack on the right to information that affects millions of Ukrainians and their personal and professional lives.

“By this one step, Peter Poroshenko has dealt a terrible blow to freedom of speech in Ukraine, which is an unforgivable violation of the right of Ukrainians to receive information on their choice.” The EU and other international partners of Ukraine should immediately urge Ukraine to abolish it, “the representative of the organization added.

Recall that the “Country” answered 5 main questions about the blocking of VKontakte, Yandex and Odnoklassniki: whether blockade of sites is feasible in practice, how to bypass the ban and why it is generally done.

Earlier, the Ukrainian branch of the international human rights organization Amnesty International condemned the Ukrainian authorities for detaining peaceful demonstrators on May 9 with St. George ribbons and other Soviet symbols. The application is posted on the organization’s website.

Amnesty International emphasizes that the Ukrainian government “is obliged to ensure freedom of speech and freedom of peaceful assembly for all citizens”
