The pressure of the authorities on the “Country” fell into the report of the US Department of State
The systematic pressure of the authorities on freedom of speech and on unwanted media, in particular, on the Internet newspaper “Country”, fell on the pages of the US Department of State’s report on human rights in Ukraine. The report was prepared by the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labor.
Thus, in section 2, entitled “Respect for Civil Liberties, Including Press Freedom,” it was noted that since the beginning of the year systematic violations of freedom of speech have been observed in Ukraine and the situation is getting worse.
As one example is the detention on June 22 in Kiev on the case of extortion of the editor-in-chief of the Country Igor Guzhva (as our publication has repeatedly written, this case was fabricated from beginning to end by the authorities of Ukraine).
“The lawyers of Guzhva claimed that the journalist was arrested because of his professional activities, because his media publicly criticized high-ranking government officials,” the report said.
In addition, the report notes a lack of results in the investigation of the resonant murder of journalist Pavel Sheremet, as well as the situation with the media holding Vesti.
Also, the report recollects about 75% of the language quota set on Ukrainian TV channels.
